Preschool Parent FAQ

Answers to your most common questions

Age & Enrollment

We welcome children who are 2.5 to 5 years old. Most programs require children to be at least 3 years old by September 1st of the school year. We offer younger toddler classes for children starting at 2.5 years.

Children typically transition to kindergarten at age 5. If your child has a late birthday or you’re considering delaying kindergarten, we’re happy to discuss whether an additional preschool year would be beneficial — just speak with our director.

Yes! We accept mid-year enrollments based on availability. Children must have reached the minimum age for their class level. Contact our front office to check current openings.

Toilet Training

For our 3–5 year old classrooms, we do ask that children are working toward or have achieved daytime toilet independence. We understand accidents happen — our caring staff handles them with patience and zero judgment.

Please send a full change of clothes (including socks and underwear) in your child’s backpack every day. Our teachers will gently assist children who need help and will notify you if accidents become a concern that may need extra support at home.

We work with families individually. If your child is actively in the process of toilet training, please speak with the classroom teacher before the first day so we can collaborate on a consistent approach between school and home.

Teachers offer regular bathroom reminders throughout the day, especially before snack, outdoor play, and rest time. We encourage children to listen to their bodies and never shame or rush them. Positive reinforcement is always our approach.

Curriculum & Learning

Our curriculum is play-based and rooted in child-led learning. We draw from approaches including Reggio Emilia and Montessori principles, focusing on curiosity, creativity, and developing the whole child — socially, emotionally, and cognitively.

We introduce early literacy and numeracy through hands-on activities, songs, storytelling, and play. Children develop pre-reading skills like letter recognition, phonological awareness, and print concepts in age-appropriate ways — never through rote memorization or drills.

We limit screens significantly. Technology, when used, is always intentional, brief, and educator-guided — for example, a short nature documentary to support a science theme. The majority of learning happens through hands-on exploration and real-world interaction.

Our teachers observe each child carefully and adapt activities to meet a range of abilities within the same classroom. We believe every child develops at their own pace, and our environment is designed to be open-ended so children can engage at their own level.

A typical day includes a morning meeting/circle time, free choice centers (art, blocks, dramatic play, sensory, books), a group learning activity, outdoor play, snack, and a quiet/rest period. Structure and routine help children feel safe and confident.

Separation Anxiety

Completely normal! Separation anxiety is a healthy, developmentally appropriate response, especially in the early weeks. Most children settle within 5–10 minutes of a parent leaving. Our teachers are experienced at helping children transition and will always follow up with you if your child is having a difficult day.

We actually recommend keeping goodbyes brief and consistent. A long, drawn-out farewell can unintentionally signal to your child that there is something to worry about. A warm, confident goodbye hug and a clear statement like “I’ll pick you up after lunch” works best. Our staff will take over immediately.

Read books about starting school together, play “school” at home, talk positively about the teachers and activities, and establish a consistent goodbye ritual. A small comfort item (a photo of the family or a special keychain) in their cubby can also help.

We’ll send a brief message or call you once your child has settled. If a child truly cannot be consoled within a reasonable time, we will always contact you. We never leave a distressed child unattended, and we partner closely with families during tough transitions.

Food & Eating Habits

We provide a daily morning snack that is nut-free and nutrition-focused. If your child has dietary restrictions, allergies, or cultural food preferences, you are welcome to send an alternative snack from home. All outside food must be nut-free and store-packaged or clearly labelled.

We take a no-pressure approach to food. Children are never forced to eat anything they don’t want to. We encourage trying new foods through curiosity — smelling, touching, or just having it on the plate — without any expectation. Peer modeling often does the rest!

Food allergies are taken very seriously. Please complete our allergy disclosure form before the first day and meet with our director. We have protocols including allergy-aware seating, labelled items, and staff trained in recognizing reactions. Epi-pens and medications are stored securely and accessibly per health guidelines.

It’s common for children to eat less at school, especially early in the year. The excitement, new environment, and busy activity schedule can reduce appetite. Make sure your child has a nutritious breakfast before school. If appetite concerns persist over several weeks, we’re happy to chat about strategies.

Yes,  and we encourage it! Please send a clearly labelled, spill-proof water bottle filled with water only (no juice or flavored drinks). Water is available throughout the day. We take regular water breaks, especially during outdoor time.
